Mesa

Electrical work in Mesa

Mesa is really two different jobs. West Mesa is older — 1950s, 60s and 70s homes where we replace more obsolete panels than almost anywhere else in the Valley. East Mesa is newer, and the work there is about adding capacity, not fixing what's unsafe.

We do both. But if you're in west Mesa and your panel has a brand name you've never seen on a new house, that's our bread and butter.

Mesa work runs from panel and service upgrades and inspections and repairs on the west side to EV chargers, generator connections and commercial build-outs on the newer side.

West Mesa

Obsolete panels and undersized services

Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco and Sylvania, Challenger, and original fused services that never had a breaker in them. The problem isn't that they're old. The problem is that the failure mode is a breaker that doesn't trip, and you can't see that from outside the panel.

Breakers for these panels are a salvage market now. Paying a premium for a used breaker to keep a known-bad panel running is money better spent toward the panel you actually want.

Most people don't replace a panel just because it's old. They replace it because they're out of breaker space, adding AC or a car charger, remodeling a kitchen, building a casita, or because an inspector or insurer flagged it. The job covers the meter, riser and mast, panel, grounding electrode system, permit, and the utility disconnect and reconnect. See how a panel upgrade works →

Older Mesa homes

Ungrounded outlets

A lot of older Mesa homes still run two-wire circuits with no equipment ground — often hidden behind three-prong outlets someone swapped in later. We can test for it in minutes, and there are three code-compliant fixes, not one:

  1. Rewire the circuit with a grounded cable — the best fix, and the right call during a remodel.
  2. Run a separate equipment grounding conductor back to the panel or grounding system, where the layout allows it.
  3. Protect the circuit with GFCI and label the outlets "No Equipment Ground" — code-compliant and affordable, but it doesn't provide a ground for surge protectors or sensitive electronics.

We'll tell you which one fits your house and your budget.

Late-60s and 70s homes

Aluminum branch-circuit wiring

Late-60s and 70s Mesa homes often have aluminum branch wiring, and insurers ask about it. The wire in the wall is rarely the problem — the connections are. Twisting it together with standard wire nuts is not an approved repair. Approved fixes are properly rated connectors at every connection point (such as AlumiConn or COPALUM), or a partial or full rewire. We'll inspect it and give you a written scope you can hand to your insurer.

East Mesa

Newer homes, different work

On the newer east side, almost nothing we do is a safety repair. It's capacity and additions: EV chargers, pool and spa equipment and bonding, additions and casitas, generator connections with proper transfer equipment, and lighting.

Commercial

Commercial work in Mesa

Retail and restaurant tenant improvements, light industrial and warehouse work, and office build-outs — both direct to owners and as a subcontractor to general contractors.

Utility

Utility coordination: SRP and City of Mesa Electric

Most of Mesa is served by SRP, but parts of the city are served by Mesa's own municipal electric utility. You can't always tell from the address. We confirm which one serves your property, file the paperwork, and schedule the disconnect and reconnect so your power goes down once, not twice.

Permits

Permits and inspection

We pull the permit and meet the inspector. It's part of the job, not an add-on.

Arizona conditions

What the desert does to electrical work

  • Rooftop conduit and heat: Conductors in rooftop conduit see temperatures far above normal design assumptions, and have to be sized for it. Undersized rooftop runs are one of the most common problems we find on other people's work.
  • AC circuits: Air conditioning here runs harder and longer than almost anywhere. Disconnects, whips and circuits get sized for that.
  • Monsoon surges: Summer storms put spikes on the line every year. A panel-mounted surge protector protects what you can't unplug — AC, furnace board, range, pool equipment.

FAQ

Questions from Mesa customers

My panel is a brand nobody stocks breakers for. What now?

Common in west Mesa. We'll tell you honestly whether it's worth chasing a breaker or time to replace the panel.

Who's my electric utility in Mesa?

Usually SRP, but parts of the city are served by City of Mesa Electric. We'll confirm it for your address and handle the coordination either way.

Are the three-prong outlets in my older house actually grounded?

Not always. We can test it in minutes and walk you through the three code-compliant fixes.

How long is the power off for a service change?

Most of a day. We schedule it so the disconnect and reconnect happen once.
